Mysticism & Gospel of Thomas – No. 79 – Inner Rebirth
Verse - Inner Rebirth
A woman from the crowd said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you." He said to her, "Blessed are those who have heard the word of the Father and have kept it in truth. For the days will come when you will say to yourselves, 'Blessed is the womb that did not conceive and the breasts that did not give milk.'"
Comment
Jesus does not respond to the praise he receives from the crowd, but instead moves on from external birth to the more essential: the inner rebirth, which makes people awake and receptive to the divine word and to the reception of the light of truth, and ready to be not only hearers but also proclaimers and keepers of the truth. But if a person enters the world and in a long life does not manage to have Christ born in him, if during his existence he did not awaken to the inner light and did not pass from the transitory into the eternal life, he will one day painfully realize that he missed the meaning of his existence, the meaning of the school of life - and then he may think that it would have been better not to have been born.
But this idea is absurd. For the one who gave him life gave him the task of self-realization and perfection, and also the gift and the ability to fulfill it, so there is no reason to despair. The path inward is always open and the light of truth can, when a person detaches himself from the outside, turns inward willing to awaken and sends light, and opens himself to the Eternal and surrenders himself, flare up from within in an instant and transform and renew him from the ground up.
